Planets

I was checking my e-mail account which I hadn't checked for a while and I found some cool pictures that my host sister sent to me two years ago. I show you.

Don't you feel we are so tiny in the uviverse?? Looking at these pictures make me remember the great music pieces composed by Gustav Holst. The Music name is "The Planets". You may know or have heard"Jupiter". He composed music for other planets, too.

Actually, I researched about him to write essay for last semester writing class.

Gustav Holst is an English composer who had a great influence on English music in the 20th century. He composed famous suite for band such as “Suite in E Flat” and “Suite in E”. However, probably he is best known for his composition “The Planets”.

“The Planets” is an orchestral suite which is constituted by six themes, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. There is no Pluto in “The Planets”, because it had not been discovered at the time. Have you ever heard one of these themes? I bet you have. A few years ago, a Japanese singer whose name is Ayaka Hirahara sang “Jupiter” with her own words. It was a huge hit, so you could hear it everywhere. “Mars” and “Jupiter” are especially famous pieces in “The Planets”, they are often used in a movie or TV commercial.

The traits of each theme are described by the composer, “Mars, the Bringer of War”, “Venus, the Bringer of Peace”, “Mercury, the Winged Messenger”, “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity”, “Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age”, “Uranus, the Magician”, “Neptune, the Mystic”. You could easily imagine why the composer described each planet like this, if you listened to them. For example, in the beginning of “Mars, the Bringer of War”, you can hear it at very fast tempo, 5/4 meter and gradual dynamics, this sound makes you imagine that two forces are facing each other and they are about to fight. You will be amazed how composer’s idea corresponds to your imagination. “The Planets” is definitely wonderful program music suite.

Although the wonderfulness of “The Planets”, Gustav Holst was not successful as a composer until he composed it. He was born in a musician family. He was taught piano and violin and began composing when he was twelve. Unfortunately, he had to give up playing the piano because of his nerve condition of right hand. Instead of playing the piano, Holst started to play the trombone which is less pain for him to play. He was excellent at playing it, so he entered Royal College of Music in London as a trombone player. After he graduated from the college, he spent most of his life as a music teacher at girl’s school.

Holst started working on “The Planets” in the spring of 1914. “The Planets” was finished in two stages. “Mars”, ”Venus”, and “Jupiter” were composed at one time, and he finally completed the orchestration in 1917. Holst was influenced by the English folk song (as it is heard in the “Jupiter” movement), and he was also interested in Eastern Philosophy. This led him to study astrology. He got ideas of different qualities or personalities of planets from studying it. We surely know it worked really well to express planets by music.

Holst disliked the fact that most people thought “The Planets” was his best work. He complained that “The Planets” was not completed yet. Yes, we know he is right. Even though Holst wasn’t satisfied with his work, people loved “The Planets”, and even today, it is considered as one of the most popular orchestral compositions. end.

Have you ever listened to Holst's Planets expext "Jupiter"? Jupiter is definitely the greatest piece in the "Planets". However, I like Venus, Mars and Nuptune, too. BUT I LOVE listening to Mercury, so much!! I put that movie, Please listen to it!!

Book Report

The name of book I read was "This Strange New Feeling". I enjoyed reading this book. It was easy reading!! Maybe it was too easy for book report.. but I really liked the story. The story was about slavery.

Book title: This Strange New Feeling
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.
Place: 730 Broadway, New York, NY 10003
Date: 1981
No. of Pages: 159

Responding To the Plot:
If I was a main character in this story, I would have released all slaves at the plantation before the master of plantation realized I helped other slaves to escape from slavery. In this story, the main character, Ras, once ran away from the master with helping of another old slave and white man who didn’t owe any slaves though he had huge land. Ras returned to plantation as a slave again after being free, but this time to help other slaves to run away from plantation. He helped several slaves to escape but not all of them. Before he do that, finally the master realize what Ras was doing and he was furious about it. The master tried to kill Ras and they got in fight. Ras’s girlfriend, Sally, was so afraid of her boyfriend was about to be killed by the master, so she took master’s gun and shot him. They became free at last from this moment. Yes, they are free now, but how other slaves who were left at the plantation were going to be? This story is kind of love story, but I would changed ending of this story to describe more details about other slaves.
Ras’s girl friend, Sally said “I feel so strange” after she shot the master and killed him. I chose this quote because this is a theme of this story and I thought this quote explained how slave feels to be free well. Her feelings of “strange” can be taken two meanings. One is that she felt happy because she became free regardless of what she did. The other meaning is she felt strange because she has never been free in her life, this is her first experience to be free and her dream suddenly came true, so she didn’t get used to yet.

Literary Terms:
1) Setting
Slavery era in United States, at a huge plantation where mean and cruel owner woes a lot of salves to run a business.

2) Points of view
This story is mainly told from the main character’s mind. However, since this story develops with utterance of characters, there are little insights of other characters, too.

3) Conflict
There are several conflicts accompanied slavery in this story, the owner of plantation versus his slaves, environment of being slave versus himself/herself, fighting to be free versus to obey and slavery supporter versus people who against slavery.

4) Climax
When sally shot the master and won freedom, this is the climax of this novel.

5) Symbol
Fish. The story about fishing and eating fish told from Jakes Brown, a white guy, to Ras led him a passion of winning a free. Since fish swims in the river freely, it can be stands for freedom for Ras.

6) Irony
Ras and Sally felt something happy when they killed their master and became free. Murder is a crime no matter how the situation was, but for these slaves, killing their master is only way to be free, this is an irony.

7) Theme
What is being a slave and how slaves feel when they became free.

Reflecting on the Story:
The author, Julius Lester was involved in Civil Rights Movement, and he is occasionally controversial professor, so he must have strong conviction about racism. I can tell from his novel that he wants to tell us how African-American People had been suffered from their historical background.
In this story, one of the plantation owners said that “Well, sometimes I wonder, who is real slave? Us or them? We’re as much enslaved to them, if not more. How many of you go to sleep at night worrying if you’re going to wake up in the morning and find your barns burned down, or the legs of your mules busted”. Even cruel plantation owners afraid of their slaves because they knew they are doing wrong thing, that is why they are always paying attention to their slaves not to do anything bad for them sometimes with violence.
This story develops with utterance of character, so I really couldn’t expect what is going to happen next and sometimes be confused because characters say unexpected things suddenly. This style of story makes readers excited. The story is telling us that how slaves suffered their environment and how one black man tried to hard to bring freedom for his fellows and himself. I knew about slavery from textbook of world history, but through reading story of slaves, I felt how it was cruel and unethical thing. I could understand about slavery better than just knowledges from text book.

That is all my book report. I was so sad I got lower marks than I had expected. I'll try harder next time!! I am reading "Awaking" which was witten by Kate Chopin.

The most interesting English book I have read is "Hard Times" written by Dickens. I chose yhis book for my first book report at AGU. I am not taking English literature class, because I was not interested in it,now I want to take it for next year.

Author: Charles Dickens
Book title: Hard Times
Publisher: Macmillan
Place: England
Date: 1991
No. of Pages: 106

Plot summary:
Thomas Gradgrind, a man of realities, emphasizes the importance of “fact” in human’s life. His family and the school which Gradgrind is running are ruled by his conviction. There is a one student who is in circus, named Sissy Jupe. Gradgrind disliked her unrealistic way of thinking when he saw her at school. After the school, on the way to home, Gradgrind saw the circus which Sissy belonged. He was shocked to see his children, Louisa and Tom there.
Joshiah Bounderby is a banker, merchant and manufacturer, quite rich man. He is a close friend with Gradgrind. Bounderby and Gradgrind tried to Sissy out from school and went her house. However, they found out that Sissy’s father left his daughter and ran away. Bounderby suggested Gradgrind to take care of her. Gradgrind first hesitated about the suggestion, but accepted it.
Stephen Blackpool, a good workman of Bounderby’s mill, wants to get divorce from his wife and wants to marry another woman. His wife is a terrible drinker, who spends everything for drinking. The woman Blackpool fall in love with is Rachel, who is nursing Mrs.Blackpool. Rachel Stooped Mrs.Blackpool from taking poison.
Blackpool asked Bounderby to give him advice but he knew that he is unable to get divorce from his wife under the law.
Bounderby asked Louisa to marry him through Gradgrind. Regardless of Bounderby’s personality and age differences, Louisa accepted this proposal. Mrs Sparist, a housekeeper at Bounderby’s house, was shocked to hear the news that Bounderby was going to marry.
Louisa’s marriage was unhappy. James Harthouse, who has connection with Bounderby about political jobs, got interested in Louisa. He tried to attract Louisa by making use of Tom, Louisa’s brother.
One day, thief broke into Bounderby’s bank. Blackpool was cast doubt on about that incidence, because he was fired from Bounderby’s mill. Louisa suspected his brother of theft. Harthose denied Louisa’s idea, but she didn’t give in. Mrs Sparist spied on Louisa and Harthouse. She knew the two were trying to meet by themselves in another place, and heard the voice which Harthouse was flirting Louisa. Louisa went back to coketown. Mrs Sparist followed Louisa to get more evidence of affair. However Louisa went back to her father’s house to ask her father protection, because she knew she was suspected of having affair with Harthouse. Gradgrind finally realized that his way of education was wrong. Bounderby made decision that get divorce from Louisa. On the other hand, Sissy met Harthouse and persuaded him to give Louisa up.
Blackpool left coketown to search another job, and Bounderby decided to give money whoever found Blackpool. Sissy and Rachel found Blackpool’s hat near the coalfield and they found Blackpool himself, lying the bottom of coalfield with a serious injury. Before he passed away he asked Rachel and Sissy to prove his innocent and said that Tom should know the truth.
From the resentment towards Bounderby, Mrs Sparsit looked for Mrs Pegler and discovered her. She found out that Mrs Pegler is a Bounderby’s mother and his story of his life – self made man stuff, was totally fiction.
Sissy and Louisa told Gradgrind Tom was a thief and now he is harbored in circus. Tome could run away and went abroad thanks to Sleary, the director of the circus. Tom was ended up died in another country because of fever, before he died, he sent letter to his sister.
All distinctive characters in this story ended up unhappy life except Sissy who knows what is love should be or how man should be, in the right way.

1) Points of view
There are nine main characters in this story. Gradgrind, Tom, Louisa, Bounderby, Sissy and others. Sometimes character’s personalities are described in the story by author and also we can tell their characteristic and feelings through reading. This novel should be omniscient style.

2) Setting
Coketown is a fiction town, but it has its model. In 1853 the author of this novel, Charles Dickens visited the town of Preston in the North England. He used his observations of Preston as the basis idea for Hard Times. All events were happened in Coketown, and time setting is the industrial revolution era.

3) Conflict
In this novel, characters are often conflict with himself /herself or their environment. For example, Gradgrind vs his conviction (himself), Sissy vs her environment, Louisa vs her environment and herself ( married a man whom she really did not want to, feeling toward another man) and so on. It seems that characters are always conflict with something in this novel, but I think most of those are just surfaces, and character’s conflictions with theirselves suggest more profound meanings.

4) Climax
There is no clear climax in this novel, but through reading, readers are found out what is important for one’s life. I think this point is the climax of this novel.

5) Theme
In this time era, logical thinking and rationality are keys to success.
But lack of humanity is leads to collapse of one’s life.

6) Symbol
Circus is one big symbol of this novel. People in Circus are kind and filled with humanity such as Sissy and Srealy. Circus is one world which is consisted by imagination, and excitement feeling. It seems that circus is far away from reality, but in the reality world people can never be happy. Circus is a symbol of ideal life.

7) Irony
We can see many ironies in this novel. Fist of all, as I described beforehand, Circus and reality world is the biggest irony. In addition, Tom, who deceived people, was disguised in the circus. He had to hide himself over and over again because of one mistake he made, this is another irony. Gradgrind emphasized importance of “fact” in human’s life and raised his children followed his conviction. This was for his children but, one became thief and one was divorced. He realized what is important for human life at the end of his life which was too late.

Evaluation
Although many characters were appeared in this novel, their characterizations were excellent so that I did not have to check the previous pages to make sure that I could understand the story. Many suffering events were happened one after another, so I never got bored when I was reading. There are many chapters, it seems each of them has independent stories but they are all related, of course. As you read, you can understand the relationship between chapters and chapters, this makes readers more excited.
This novel tells us what is important for our lives. Also, alarmed us that concerning to be rational and to practice logical thinking all the time will kill your emotion and humanity and they will not lead you happiness. Time setting of this novel is the industrial revolution era, but we still live in Hard Time.
